10 Best Teen Shows Based On Movies | ScreenRant

It’s no secret that Hollywood loves to adapt stories for the big screen, but occasionally big-screen movies get adapted for the small screen. This has become especially true for the teen TV genre, as more and more television shows seem to be based on popular teen movies.

While not as popular as a book to TV adaptations, movie to TV adaptations offer some benefits for hardcore fans of the movie. Most notably, it gives fans more time in their favorite universe to learn new things about the location and the characters. While not all movie to television adaptations are great, there is a handful in the teen genre that deserve to be watched at least once.

10 10 Things I Hate About You (2009 – 2010)

1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You is one of the best rom coms from the 1990s and it cultivated a strong fandom that led to the movie getting a TV series in 2009 on ABC Family.

While the television series still followed the Stratford sisters, the plot was completely different than the beloved movie. In this version, the Stratford sisters move to California to attend high school, and Patrick doesn’t date Kat because of a bribe.

9 Cobra Kai (2018 – )

Over 30 years after the release of one of the best sports movies of all time, The Karate Kid universe was introduced to a new generation with the streaming series, Cobra Kai.

Unlike other TV adaptations, Cobra Kai is a direct sequel to the beloved franchise and centers on a grown-up Johnny Lawrence, who decides to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo and help train a whole new group of kids. Johnny isn’t the only original character featured in the series, though, as both Daniel and John have roles making Cobra Kai the perfect bridge series for both old and new fans.

8 Friday Night Lights (2006 – 2011)

Friday Night Lights is one of the richest adapted series, having first been a movie adapted from a non-fiction novel. Then, later, a television series was adapted from said movie.

While both the movie and the television series focused on the Dillon Panthers football team, they had widely different ways of telling a similar story. The series was able to focus on several different characters’ storylines, jumping from Coach Taylor and his personal lives to the lives of the team members, which included some serious subject matter.

7 Heathers (2018)

In 1989, the teen black comedy Heathers hit theaters as the antithesis to the great John Hughes teen movies of the time. The movie ended up becoming a cult classic, which led to a musical and television show adaptation.

Unfortunately, the Heathers TV series faced a lot of problems, which forced it to be canceled after one season. Like the movie, the show followed a group of teenagers in the “Heathers” clique, but it was set in 2018 instead of the 1980s. Heathers was known for pushing boundaries and the series was no different, which is what ultimately led to its downfall, as reported by the Independent.

6 High Fidelity (2020)

High Fidelity was first released in March 2000 and was based on a novel of the same name. The film is considered by many to be one of the greatest movies of its time, leading to it being adapted as an original series for Hulu.

While much of the plot was kept the same, with Rob reminiscing about his failed relationships to figure out where things went wrong, the television series did do some things differently. Most notably, Rob was changed to a female character played by the talented Zoë Kravitz. Unfortunately, the show was canceled too soon, earning a place in the canceled after one season club.

5 High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019 – )

As if the name isn’t obvious, Disney Plus’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was adapted from one of the most successful DCOMs of all time: High School Musical.

However, HSMTMS takes a more meta approach than its adaptation by acknowledging that High School Musical is just a movie that happened to film at their high school, East High. The first series follows the drama department as they put on East High’s first-ever production of High School Musical. In doing this, HSMTMTS can connect with its source material and manages to be uniquely its own thing.

4 Love, Victor (2020 – )

When Love, Simon became one of the most unforgettable teen romance movies of the 2000s, it only made sense to bring the world of Creekwood to the small screen. Thus, the Hulu original Love, Victor was born.

Love, Victor follows a similar premise as the original movie, but it focuses on a whole new group of characters. It also allows the original characters to be off-screen mentors, as Victor confides in Simon via direct messages about his complicated feelings around his sexuality

3 Scream (2015 – 2019)

The 1996 slasher film Scream launched one of the most successful media franchises of all time, including a television adaptation in the mid-2010s.

The series aired on MTV for three seasons, where it also earned a cult following. However, it’s worth noting that the third season was a reboot of the first season with an entirely new cast of characters. Like the movie, the show followed a group of teenagers being stalked by a vicious serial killer.

2 Teen Wolf (2011 – 2017)

Teen Wolf is one of MTV’s most successful teen television series of all time, but many fans don’t realize that the show is actually an adaptation. In 1985, the Teen Wolf movie was released and it starred Michael J. Fox in the lead role.

The only thing Teen Wolf the movie and series have in common is the general plot of the story that revolves around teen werewolves. In fact, the original movie was a comedy, while the television series is firmly in the drama department. Thus, Teen Wolf, the series, was able to be its own unique thing.

1 The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (2021 – )

In the world of remakes and reboots, it was only a matter of time before The Mighty Ducks saw its story revisited. However, no one thought the series would be turned into a television series until Disney+ did just that.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is a sequel to the original trilogy but follows a whole new group of child hockey players. However, Emilio Estevez reprises his role as Coach Bombay and ends up coming out of his coaching retirement and rut to help the new team score.
