Scrapped Masters of the Universe Film Details Revealed By Writer

David S. Goyer shares the plans for his scrapped Masters of the Universe film. He-Man is making a big return to the pop culture landscape with the upcoming Masters of the Universe: Revelations from writer and director Kevin Smith, which will premiere on Netflix on July 23, 2021. The Masters of the Universe property was one of the biggest toy lines of the 1980s and spawned a popular animated series, a spin-off cartoon in the form of She-Ra, and even a live-action film in 1987.

Shortly following the massive success of Transformers in 2007, work on a modern live-action film of Masters of the Universe began. Originally developed by Warner Bros., the project moved over to Sony Pictures in 2009 where the studio has struggled to get the project off the ground. Over the years, a number of directors have been attached to it, including Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) and McG (Terminator: Salvation). The film seemed to be coming along when in 2019 Noah Centineo was announced to play the role of He-Man, but the actor dropped out of the project in early 2021 and no word has been made on the status of a live-action Masters of the Universe film.

In an interview with THR, David S. Goyer revealed plans for his proposed take on the Masters of the Universe franchise. Goyer was approached in 2017 to write the script and was even considered to direct before passing on the project. He said his take on the material would have zeroed in on the relationship between He-Man and his pet, Battle Cat, and establish that there was a long line of He-Men and Battle Cats through the ages. Read what Goyer said below:

“I legitimately liked the script that we did. What I liked the most about it was that it was mostly about a friendship between He-Man and Battle Cat. The idea was there had always been He-Men and different recipients of the Sword of Power and that Battle Cat had always served at their side. And this was a new He-Man that Battle Cat and many people didn’t think it was worthy of the sword. So it was a story of the character earning the sword, but, more importantly, earning the friendship of Battle Cat, who just thought this guy was a lightweight. I really liked it. I thought it was a fun story. There was a lot of humor in it and it creeps up on you because Battle Cat sort of grudgingly accepts him, and it’s Battle Cat’s acceptance of He-Man that gave this version of the story heart.”

Sony Pictures opted to go a different route with the proposed film it seemed. In 2019, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) were brought on board to rewrite the script for Masters of the Universe. It's interesting to note that the plot of making the central film a buddy story between He-Man and Battle Cat is very similar to the plot of 2018's Bumblebee, which rebooted the Transformers franchise by focusing on a smaller character story in favor of exploring the massive mythology. That similarity may have given Sony Pictures a reason to scrap Goyer's plan.

While Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles found success on the big screen, Masters of the Universe has been one of the 80s properties that have struggled. Though, like its contemporaries Thundercats and Voltron, the Masters of Universe franchise still finds a great deal of success as an animated series. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was a massive hit on Netflix and anticipation is high for Masters of the Universe: Revelations. Given the success of the newest batch of series on Netflix, it could be just what is needed to get the Masters of the Universe film off the ground.
