Emily Blunt Had Cute Name For Dwayne Johnson On Jungle Cruise Set

ScreenRant - Feed

Emily Blunt recently shared that she came up with an adorable nickname for her Jungle Cruise co-star, Dwayne Johnson. In a union of America's sweetheart and America's British sweetheart that's sure to heal this nation, the Jungle Cruise co-stars have formed a friendship with unknowable diplomatic potential. The actors star as Frank Wolff and Dr. Lily Houghton in the upcoming Disney adventure movie, which is based on the Disneyland ride of the same name. On the ride, passengers board a 20th-century-style riverboat that winds through an inhospitable jungle.

Blunt and Dwayne Johnson's respective entertainment careers differ in origin, with Johnson becoming an action star in The Scorpion King relatively quickly after his wrestling days. Blunt, on the other hand, rose to fame for her performance in The Devil Wears Prada and initially acted primarily in dramas and dramedies. The actress has taken on more action-heavy blockbusters over the years, including thrillers like A Quiet Place, which is directed by her husband John Krasinski. Johnson and Blunt have decidedly different on-screen presences, with Johnson naturally falling into the role of the heroic lead while Blunt transforms across genres. It's clear that both actors have a sense of humor that shows through in their comedic roles, as well as on The Rock's prolific Instagram.

In a recent interview with ET, the actors shared some delightful details about their on-set friendship, crucially including the fact that Blunt addresses The Rock as "Toots." The co-stars are currently promoting Jungle Cruise, which will premiere in theaters on July 30. Blunt says that the term of endearment is an "old nickname," which is accurate in more ways than one: the slang term for a woman dates back to the 1930s. Regardless, the actress found that it suited the 6'5 professional wrestling champion. Read what Blunt said below:

It has been around now for 3 years. I used to enjoy calling him very, sort of sweet, cute things. Like he texts me, "Alright, I'm leaving now, I'll see you on set," and I'm like, "Ok cupcake."

Johnson's response confirms that Blunt's renaming was both a friendly gesture and a clear power move to establish dominance in their relationship. The F9 star jokingly admits that, when he met Blunt, "I had seen all of Emily's movies. She had watched none of mine, so it all worked out perfectly." Blunt's old-timey dialect may have been partially inspired by her role in Jungle Cruise, which takes place in the 20th century when "Toots" was still in the vernacular. In the period fantasy, Blunt's character is a scientist in search of a fabled magical Tree of Life. Frank Wolff (Johnson) captains the boat that's meant to ferry Dr. Lily Houghton and her brother McGregor (Jack Whitehall) via river through the jungle to their destination.

It's always fun to hear that a witty repartee exists between any given pair of co-stars, but Blunt and Johnson's banter is especially tickling considering Blunt's notable Britishness and Johnson's decidedly un-Toots-like stature. The fact that Johnson has probably never eaten a real cupcake in his life makes Blunt's other nickname all the more hilarious. It's also worth emphasizing the irony that Blunt felt the need to give Dwayne Johnson, who possesses perhaps the most famous nickname of any living person, multiple new nicknames. As for whether all this riffing has any bearing on Jungle Cruise, if the co-stars' off-screen dynamic is any indication, Blunt and Johnson make a good team.
