WandaVision's Elizabeth Olsen was captured on camera by her husband reacting hilariously to her Emmy nomination. Olsen reprised her role as Wanda Maximoff for the MCU's first streaming series on Disney+, which premiered this past January to acclaim from fans and critics alike. WandaVision explored the aftermath of Wanda's unexplored trauma following the death of the love of her life, Vision, in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Wanda's journey of accepting her loss culminated in her accepting her destiny as the powerful Scarlet Witch. WandaVision was a risky endeavor from the get-go, but the payoff was worth it for fans and Marvel alike.
After all, WandaVision featured two characters from the MCU who had up to that point, been supporting players. While Wanda and Vision did get their time to shine somewhat in Infinity War, fans never got to see their relationship fully develop past a few scenes and Wanda and Vision's tragic parting facing the threat of Thanos in the climax of Infinity War. What WandaVision did so masterfully was develop a mystery and show viewers the love that Wanda had for Vision via a tribute to sitcoms that eventually culminated in the big reveal of who the villain behind the mysterious town of Westview had been all along. Not Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn). It was always Wanda's grief.
WandaVision garnered a whopping 23 Emmy nominations this week, including one for Olsen for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Olsen's husband, Robbie Arnett, posted a photo of Olsen on his Instagram stories after news of the Emmy nominations broke, complete with a hilarious caption. Check out the image below:
Arnett's caption is hilarious and a funny tribute to Olsen as a first-time Emmy nominee. All jokes aside, her nomination was well deserved, without a doubt. Not only did Olsen manage to seamlessly transition acting styles between multiple decades of sitcoms, but she also effortlessly portrayed Wanda's grief in a relatable way.
While Agatha may have informed Wanda that she was the Scarlet Witch of legend, a being that was more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme, Wanda was also just a woman grieving the loss of her great love and the normal family life she always wanted. Wanda never sought power, but never hesitated to protect the people she loved with a terrifying ferocity. Olsen has done a fantastic job of capturing Wanda's character evolution over the years, portraying the character with a layered complexity that has left fans eager for her return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
WandaVision was a wonderful creative risk that was a joy to watch. The series did a great job of furthering Wanda's character arc while also developing her relationship with Vision and introducing new characters like Agatha and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Whether or not Olsen wins the Emmy, it'll be great to see where her character goes from here, now that she has truly embraced being the Scarlet Witch.
