Following the stunning cancellation of HBO's Lovecraft Country only a few weeks ago, the show now finds itself nominated for an impressive 18 Emmy Awards. Lovecraft Country is based on Matt Ruff's novel of the same name, which served as the blueprint for the show's single season. The show's plot followed Atticus Freeman's search for his father as he traveled across the United States in the 1950s with help from his uncle and a friend. It was created by Misha Green, and further behind the scenes talent included J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele as executive producers. The onscreen talent included Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Jamie Chung.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Award nominees were announced Tuesday, with the canceled Lovecraft Country earning 18 nominations (via TV Line), with the most impressive being Majors for Outstanding Lead Actor, Smollett for Outstanding Lead Actress, and Outstanding Drama Series. In addition, the show also nabbed nominations for both Supporting Actor categories for Williams and Aunjanue Ellis, Guest Actor for Courtney B. Vance, and various other categories that highlight the behind-the-scenes work. Garnering 18 nominations is an astounding achievement for any show, which only furthers how odd it is that the series was canceled.
Green had pitched story ideas for Lovecraft Country season 2, but HBO seemingly wasn't interested, which came as a shock to most fans and even the show's actors, some of which had gone as far as clearing their schedules to film the next season. While audiences may hope that all the Emmy nominations could lead to a revival of the series, that prospect could be tricky as Green deemed the cancellation as amicable, with both herself and the actors having already lined up future projects. Speculation of the show's return may even be fueled further if Lovecraft Country ends up winning any number of the Emmys for which it's nominated. While the show's return is still unlikely, its Emmy nominations further prove the level of quality the show delivered every week.
