Catherine Zeta-Jones is joining the cast of the upcoming Netflix series, Wednesday, in the role of Morticia Addams. The series is said to follow Wednesday Addams, the daughter of the Addams family. Currently set for eight episodes, the show will follow Wednesday’s time at Nevermore Academy, where psychic abilities begin to manifest while she navigates new relationships and works to thwart a killing spree. If that weren’t enough, Wednesday will also unravel a 25-year-old mystery that involves her parents, Gomez and Morticia.
According to Variety, Zeta-Jones will be lending her talent to the family matriarch in a guest-starring role. She joins Luis Guzmán, who will be playing her husband, Gomez. Jenna Ortega, known as Young Jane on Jane the Virgin and who can next be seen in the upcoming Scream 5, will be playing the title character, Wednesday. The show’s talent also extends behind the scenes as Tim Burton serves as both director and executive producer.
The role of Morticia Addams comes with a long line of esteemed actresses who have already tackled the role. The 1960s TV series saw Carolyn Jones playing the part, but most audiences today likely remember Anjelica Huston’s portrayal from 1991’s The Addams Family and its sequel, Addams Family Values. Though not as fondly remembered, Daryl Hannah even tackled the role for 1998’s Addams Family Reunion. The most recent incarnation of the characters was in 2019’s The Addams Family, and while it was an animated film, Charlize Theron lent her voice to Morticia. Zeta-Jones, known for roles in past films like Chicago and The Mask of Zorro, as well as more recent TV shows like Prodigal Son, will get a chance to leave her mark on a character that has been with audiences for decades. Further details on Wednesday will be released as the project develops.
