A new clip for Rick and Morty has teased what's in store for season five's fifth episode, titled "Amortycan Grickfitti," ahead of its release on Sunday, July 18th. Rick and Morty returned on June 20th after over a year off. While each episode is typically self-contained, the season so far has seen a growing divide between Rick and Morty, with the pair seemingly going off on their own separate adventures for the most part.
Thus far, Morty finally got closure with Jessica and became infatuated with an environmental superhero, whereas Rick took part in a bar crawl of end-of-the-world parties, and the family was forced to battle multiple different clone versions of themselves. The latest episode was one of the few episodes where the pair united after being thrown together once again to stop a horde of mutated sperm monsters accidentally created by Rick after Morty combined his own sperm with horse sperm. This change of pace has actually been quite refreshing as it has shown different sides of the characters and has allowed them to develop further while away from one another.
However, the separation looks set to continue if the new clip from episode 5 is anything to go by. The thirty-second clip released by Swimpedia, a non-Adult Swim affiliated YouTube channel, teased Rick and his son-in-law Jerry going on a guy's night, much to the shock of Rick's daughter, Beth. Called away on a horse-doctor related issue, Beth asks Jerry to watch Morty and Summer, only to be informed by Rick that he is unable to because "Friday nights are all about Rick and Jerry." The clip ends with Beth leaving Summer in charge, and will undoubtedly result in some misadventures for the siblings. The full teaser trailer can be watched below:
It's unclear why Rick and Jerry are suddenly spending time together, but it does continue to tease the apparent divide between Rick and Morty. Rick has seemingly been spending more time with other members of the family, choosing Summer to accompany him on his apocalypse bar-crawl in episode 3, "A Rickconvenient Mort," and now choosing to go on an adventure with Jerry, who he usually despises, instead of his grandson. Interestingly, while Beth is talking in the trailer, Rick is searching through a box labelled "Occult Items" implying that there may be something much more to this sudden desire to spend time together. The last time the pair spent an entire episode together was in season 3, episode 5, "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy," but this was entirely at Morty's behest. It did allow the show to reassess and further develop the relationship between the pair, so it's possible this could lead to more of the same.
Likewise, whatever is in store for Morty and Summer, and possibly Beth, is likely to explore the sibling dynamic within the show. The same episode that saw Rick and Jerry go off together also saw Summer deal with her self-esteem issues with the help of Morty and Beth, so a similar set up could be taking place for Morty to explore everything he has been going through this season. Whatever it is, it's more than likely to be as anarchic and entertaining as the rest of the season so far. Fans will just have to wait for Rick and Morty's fifth episode to air on July 18th to find out.
