David Harbour Says He Hated The Family Dog Chester In Stranger Things

ScreenRant - Feed

David Harbour says he hated working with the Byers family dog, Chester, in Stranger Things. Harbour is best known for his role as local police chief, Jim Hopper, who helps the inhabitants of Hawkins, Indiana battle the supernatural forces revolving around the Upside Down. At the end of season 3, his character was thought to have died in an explosion that closed the Upside Down’s latest gate and defeated the Mind Flayer (for now). Trailers and other promotional material for season 4 have revealed that Hopper is alive and in Russia.

It’s been over two years since the season 3 finale. Production for Stranger Things’ fourth season began last year but faced months of delays due to COVID-19. Thankfully, filming is now well underway. The upcoming season will feature a time jump to explain the aging of the series’ young characters and actors. Harbour has compared his character to Gandalf, alluding to how he has experienced the passage of time since season 3. Lately, Habour has been asked numerous Stranger Things questions while promoting Black Widow, in which he plays Red Guardian, Russia’s version of Captain America.

During a recent appearance on Hot Ones, Harbour reveals the one thing he did not enjoy about filming Stranger Things’ first season: the Byers’ dog Chester. While viewers should remember what happened to Dustin’s cat, Mews, casual fans probably don’t remember Chester, who wasn’t brought back after season 1. Apparently, the dog was so bad on set, Harbour suggested Chester be killed off. Read what Harbour had to say below:

"I hated that f*cking dog so bad," said Harbour. "Take after take it would wander off or do something," he explained. "And then I remember the trainer on the sidelines going, 'Come on! We got to make our money!' Yeah, I walked up to them and I was like, 'You know, the Byers should probably have that dog put to sleep next season. We never talk about it the whole rest of the show... We should find it in the Upside Down in one of these future seasons."

Chester appeared in a total of four episodes of Stranger Things’ first season before disappearing—something fans have questioned over the years. The dog’s last appearance came in the season 1 finale when Chester stole meat off of the kitchen counter on Christmas Eve. Despite not being mentioned in season 2, a gravesite was added to the set of season 3, revealing that Chester had indeed passed away after the events of the first season. This isn’t the first time Harbour has called out Chester; in a 2016 interview with Howard Stern, Harbour said the dog was the worst actor he’s ever worked with.

It appears clear that Chester was left out of future seasons of Stranger Things to facilitate production. Thankfully, Chester’s death happened off-screen, because no one would’ve enjoyed seeing the dog take on a Demodog. Or, maybe it would’ve made for an honorable/memorable last stand sort of death. That said, if Hopper can come back from the dead (presumably thanks to the Upside Down), so can Chester.
