Rockstar has received no shortage of criticism for its handling of Red Dead Online, perhaps deservedly so. Throughout its rocky start, the game was devoid of content, and over the course of its almost three-year existence, it has had multiple stretches of being virtually unplayable. That criticism is already beginning to resurge after the recent release of Red Dead Online: Blood Money.
The update doesn't really add anything new. Rockstar boasted at the announcement of the Blood Money update for Red Dead Online that players would have access to the new world of Crimes & Opportunities at no upfront cost, a direct reference to RDO's Player Roles system. Rockstar didn't mention that the update was just a fresh coat of paint on Stranger missions and a new menu system with which to access them.
When Rockstar announced the Blood Money content, it showed off a trailer featuring a new focal character named Guido Martelli, who had a new line of work for players that would even include multi-stage missions and lead up to grand Opportunities. Players can find Mr. Martelli in Saint Denis to get started on the work, but after that the man vanishes, and players have to seek out certain Stranger missions throughout the world. So all of the hype for some interesting new Red Dead Online content, like long-requested bank robberies, quickly gets deflated - and that's only the beginning.
Once players find one of the named strangers to begin their work, they'll be introduced to the new mission menu. It looks promising at first, with a handful of missions that will help players build Capitale as they work toward the big jobs in Red Dead Online: Blood Money. The problem is all the missions play like Stranger missions for the most part, adding no real variety to the world. Simple missions of robbing a stagecoach or kidnapping a person play like watered-down versions of things players could already do in the game. Sadly, even the new bank robberies have little depth to them, and the so-called multi-stage missions are just a sequence of three Stranger missions with recurring characters.
There's no setup for any of the missions and no rhyme or reason given other than RDO players need to find more Capitale. So while GTA Online just dropped an update with a whole new set of missions, all with a specific theme, purpose, and integral characters, Red Dead Online players simply get some window dressing on missions that were already in the game (and a giant tease of doing bank robberies and train heists for which they've been begging).
There are still two Opportunities yet to release, and Rockstar promised more was to come. For right now, though, Rockstar is just giving players more of the same stuff, a recurring theme with Red Dead Online that is growing tiresome. Only time will tell if Rockstar adds some actually improved content, but for now, at least players still have their clown masks.
