With the 5th anniversary of the Pokémon GO app taking place July 17th and 18th, trainers all around the world are preparing to celebrate five years of catching wild Pokémon, fighting in raids, battling in the battle league, and earning medals.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of all the special events going on, but Trainers should think ahead so that they can make sure that they're getting everything that they can out of the 10 am-6 pm two-day event.
10 Get Out And Go!

Pokémon GO is best played when there are a lot of active Trainers participating. If Pokémon GO players are sitting at home during GO Fest, they won't be involved in nearly as many raids and events as players in more populated areas.
If Trainers can, they should travel to a nearby city, or make a special trip out of the weekend festivities. The density of Gyms and Pokéstops is also greater in cities, so Trainers can grab extra Raid Passes, berries, Revives, and potions. Additionally, if players keep moving, they'll come across a more diverse group of wild Pokémon to catch. Furthermore, there will be a 3-phase Ultra Unlock of global challenges that Trainers can participate in for special rewards. Even going to a spot where players know there are a couple of gyms or stops will help tremendously.
9 Make Space For New Pokémon

In honor of the fifth anniversary, lots of classic and new Pokémon (even new shinies!) will be available both in the wild and in three and five-star raids. Habitat hours will be in effect, and every hour they will cycle through Jungle, Desert, Mountain, Ocean Beach, and Cave.
So, if players are missing specific Pokémon types, it might be worth it to time out the habitat hours for what they need. And, to be able to catch all of these different Pokémon, they can make room in the app by going through and transferring any repeated or low-stat Pokémon to avoid running out of Pokémon storage.
8 Stock Up On Revives And Potions

There's an opportunity to get a lot of XP and new Pokémon by fighting in the many raids available during the event. Trainers can spin Gyms to get 10 raid passes a day during the event, and raid battle wins come with an additional 10,000 XP. With raid battles, however, also come knocked out and weakened Pokémon.
To avoid leaving the most effective Pokémon out of future raids, spinning Pokéstops and sending gifts to friends is the best way to ensure that trainers have enough revives and potions to heal their Pokémon for as many raids as possible.
7 Get Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces, And Incense

A special event is a perfect time for trainers to work at leveling up. Many Pokémon in the wild, more raids, and more challenges create more opportunities to generate XP. Lucky eggs double XP, and Star Pieces increase stardust earned, and players can evolve and power up more Pokémon while getting closer to the next level.
There will also be global challenges taking place during the event, creating more pokémon appearing in the wild and having a lucky egg to double XP will give trainers a nice boost.
6 Make A Legendary Pokémon Priority List

Niantic revealed early this year that during Pokémon GO Fest, every legendary Pokémon that has been available in 5-star raids up until this point will be available to raid and catch. Trainers should know that it would take a lot of committed time, raid passes, and scheduling to catch all 37 legendary Pokémon being made available during the two-day event.
Legendary raids will also be broken up by habitat, so staggering raids by type throughout the day and making a list of which Pokémon trainers would like to catch the most will be helpful. Skipping Mewtwo for the day might prove fruitful, as Mewtwo will be featured in raids the week following GO Fest.
5 Have Enough Raid Passes For Close And Remote Raids

Even though Trainers will be allowed 10 Raid Passes from Gyms a day, there are many raids taking place over the course of the event, and some Trainers may have their eye on more than 10 of the Pokémon being featured in raids. By completing Field Research during the month of July, Trainers are awarded a Remote Raid Pass every 7 days.
In addition, some Special Research tasks have Premium Raid Passes as rewards. There will also be a bundle made available during GO Fest that gifts players 3 Remote Raid Passes. If players take full advantage of these opportunities, they should be more than ready for the GO Fest raid battles.
4 Make A Tag Of Pokémon You Want To Evolve

With extra XP in the form of Lucky Eggs and event bonuses, this weekend is the perfect time to stock-pile evolutions. Trainers should go through their Pokédex and see which Pokémon they have enough candy to evolve, as well as which Pokémon are close enough to use Rare Candy on.
When players hold on to evolutions and wait until double XP, they maximize the payoff, especially for new Pokémon being obtained through evolution. An easy way to streamline the process is to create a tag for all the Pokémon Trainers would like to evolve. That way, when they pop their Lucky Eggs, they can go straight into the tag and begin evolving and earning XP.
3 Keep An Eye Out For Certain Pokémon

During the event, specific Pokémon will be available with special attacks not common to their species. Additionally, players can evolve certain Pokémon that they already have for evolved forms with special attacks as well. For example, Trainers can evolve their Kirlia (the second form of Ralts) to get a Gardevoir that knows the attack Synchronoise.
Vibrava (the second form of Trapinch) evolves into a Flygon that knows Earth Power. The featured Pokémon of the event, Pikachu, will be available in a Pop music and Rock music theme if players snapshot their finished Special Research during the event. Both of these Pikachu will also know special attacks, like Draining Kiss and Meteor Mash.
2 Get On Social Media And Add Friends

Pokémon GO friends are a very useful feature in the game. Whether it's getting items from gifts, or bonuses during raid battles, friends are a great way to get the most out of gameplay. Trainers can prepare themselves for a great GO Fest day by interacting with other Trainers in their area by seeing if there's a city-specific Pokémon GO page on Facebook or Discord.
By making friends, Trainers make more easily-won raids available to them and can get bonuses during the event, as players can make up to six Special Trades with friends every day from 1 pm on July 16th to 11 pm on July 18th.
1 Earn Coins By Putting Pokémon In Gyms

The days leading up to the anniversary are a perfect opportunity to earn Pokécoins. If players try to come across a few Gyms of their color a day and leave Pokémon in to defend them, they can earn 50 Pokécoins a day, creating a nice nest egg for expenses that may come up during the weekend.
Players can use coins to purchase Pokémon storage, item storage, Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces, Raid Passes, and any of the special avatar merch that Niantic is releasing for GO Fest to show their spirit.
