Loki Almost Revealed Mobius’ Past Life (& Why They Didn't)

ScreenRant - Feed

The Loki series almost showed Agent Mobius M. Mobius' (Owen Wilson) backstory. Marvel Studios used the recently-concluded Disney+ series to introduce the Time Variance Authority/TVA — an organization that safeguards the Sacred Timeline. With it comes a string of brand new characters including the Minutemen such as Mobius.

An analyst in the TVA, the character was in the middle of hunting Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) when Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was arrested and almost pruned. However, he suggested that they use him to figure out his female variant's pattern in order to finally catch him. Loki and Mobius' relationship was tumultuous at first, but eventually, they developed an unlikely bond that resulted in a strong friendship. This helped in Mobius' realizing that the TVA was all a lie, and like the tricksters, he, too, is also a variant, and so are the rest of the Minutemen. The show didn't reveal anything about what his life was before the organization essentially kidnapped him. But at one point Marvel Studios was planning on exploring more of it.

Speaking with ComicBook, Loki director Kate Herron shares that there were some early drafts where they were going to show whether or not Mobius had a family before joining the TVA. But, they eventually scrapped the idea because they couldn't decide yet what that backstory would be like. So, at this point, even the people involved in making the show are uncertain what Mobius' past life was like. Read what Herron said below:

"So I think for us, we had spoken about, I think there were a few drafts of the script where you did see like a family or you did see a life, but I think we all kind of decided we don't know what it is yet. And I think that's exciting, right? Because it gives more road to travel with him. And I think it's more painful when he is going to be deleted, him saying, 'What if I had a family' Because, maybe he did or maybe he didn't, I don't know where the writers will take his character."

With a second season of Loki on the way, writers have time to figure out this particular plot point in the show. However, the God of Mischief would have to work extra hard to convince the new Mobius in the finale that he's also a variant. While the original TVA from the show has already realized the truth about the organization, Sylvie accidentally sent the trickster to an alternate version — one which Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) openly manages, with Minutemen unaware of who Loki is. Unfortunately, Marvel Studios will have to do it without Herron, who's not returning for the second season.

One thing is certain, however, when it comes to Mobius — he adores jet skis. Whether or not the new version of the character has the same penchant for watercraft is currently unknown. But, chances are that Loki and his original friend will somehow find their way back to each other. From there, they can come up with a plan regarding the multiverse being in chaos.
