D&D: The Mages Of Strixhaven Classes Have Been Cut | Screen Rant

ScreenRant - Feed

The Mages of Strixhaven subclasses won't appear in the upcoming Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos sourcebook for Dungeons & Dragonsdue to negative fan feedback. Strixhaven University is a magical school that debuted in Magic: The Gathering and players will get a chance to attend it when Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos launches in November.

In the current edition of D&D, players choose a class for their character, as well as a subclass at some point between levels one and three. These subclasses help define the character's abilities, while also differentiating them from other members of the same class. The majority of the subclasses are designed in such a way that they can be used in any setting, including the homebrew worlds that many DMs use for their own games.

When Wizards of the Coast officially announced A Curriculum of Chaos in June, it launched  a set of Strixhaven subclasses meant for the book in an Unearthed Arcana article. These were designed for fans to playtest and send feedback based on their results. These subclasses were the Mage of Lorehold, Mage of Prismari, Mage of Quandrix, Mage of Silverquill, and Mage of Witherbloom. What made these subclasses unique is that they could be taken by multiple classes. The Mage of Lorehold, for example, could be taken by Bards, Warlocks, or Wizards.

It seems the experimental approach to the Mages of Strixhaven subclasses wasn't popular with the fans. Game designer Jeremy Crawford revealed during a recent Wizards of the Coast press event that the subclasses have been cut from Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos. The reason for this is due to negative fan feedback. According to Crawford, fans disliked how the subclasses didn't speak to the distinctiveness of the base classes. DMs also didn't like how the subclasses were difficult to adapt to homebrew settings, as they were so baked into the lore of Strixhaven. Instead, Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos will have different character options for players to take that are based on the five colleges in the school.

There's nothing stopping players from using the existing Mages of Strixhaven subclasses from Unearthed Arcana in their own games, but they won't be officially added to the rules of Dungeons & Dragons. There's also a chance that hybrid subclasses won't appear in future sourcebooks, or at least they won't in their current form.
