Black Adam Faces Henry Cavill's Superman In DCEU Fan Art

ScreenRant - Feed

A new piece of DC Extended Universe fan art imagines Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam and Henry Cavill's Superman facing off. Cavill first made his debut in Warner Bros.' interconnected comic book franchise with its launch film Man of Steel and has continued the performance through Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, all of which hailed from writer/director Zack Snyder. With the DCEU looking to move away from Snyder's films and a non-DCEU-connected film penned by Ta-Nehisi Coates with a Black actor portraying the role, Cavill's future as Superman is currently unknown.

Johnson has been awaiting the opportunity to make his DCEU debut for well over a decade now, first expressing interest in starring as Black Adam for a Shazam! film in the late aughts but wasn't officially confirmed to have signed on until 2014, shortly after the studio announced the franchise. With Shazam! taking priority at New Line, Black Adam languished in development hell with multiple rewrites and directors until Johnson partnered with Jaume Collet-Serra for Disney's Jungle Cruise and threw his name in the ring to helm the DC project. After finally entering production in April, the film is finally set to conclude shooting this week.

On the heels of Johnson sharing the latest photo from the set of Black Adam, artist Datrinti took to Instagram to share their latest bit of fan art for the DCEU. The art takes the behind-the-back shot of Johnson's antihero and temple set and inputs Cavill's Superman in front of him for an epic battle. Check out the exciting fan art below:

Because of the rocky reception to the early DCEU efforts from Snyder, it's been unfortunate for some fans to watch as the likelihood of Cavill's return seems to be diminishing. Though last year did bring word that The Witcher star was reportedly in negotiations to carry on the role of Superman in a different film, his commitment to the Netflix series as well as Enola Holmes 2 and Highlander reboot does point towards a new solo film for Cavill being unlikely. As much as this may be a general disappointment, the chance audiences probably won't get to see an epic showdown between Cavill's Supes and Johnson's Black Adam is even more of a bummer.

Though Shazam is generally seen as Black Adam's archenemy in the comics, he and Superman have been known to face off on occasion. Given David F. Sandberg's hit film briefly teased Johnson's DCEU arrival while showing plenty of love to Cavill's Man of Steel, the former's solo film or the in-production sequel Fury of the Gods could have been a fun setup for the battle Datrinti imagines in his art. Only time will tell what the future holds for both characters in the WB franchise.
